While collaborating on the renovation of the Divadlo na Fidlovačce theater (1996), some successful architectural designs for buildings within the sculpture park were created during spare moments. Among these, Associate Professor Malena’s design for a greenhouse with supporting facilities served as the basis for the project carried out by Ateliér Atlas s.r.o. in 2012.
Miroslav Malena (1937–2008) is undoubtedly one of the most significant Czech set designers and theater architects of the second half of the 20th century. He was one of the last students of Prof. František Tröstr at DAMU in Prague; together with director Jan Schmid, he helped shape the artistic vision of the now-legendary Studio Ypsilon theater, first in Liberec and later in Prague. Malena also collaborated with other theaters both at home and abroad, not only as a set designer but also as a director. Beginning in the 1970s, he expanded his work into the field of theater architecture, initially focusing on roofing for summer stages and performance areas, and later designing renovations and reconstructions of theater interiors. Notable examples include the Archa Theater and the Fidlovačka Theater in Prague, the Municipal Theater and the Reduta Theater in Brno, and the Horácké Theater in Jihlava, not to mention a number of projects in the countries of the former Yugoslavia.
